What Is Red Dye Diesel?

Red dye diesel — also called dyed diesel, off-road diesel, or non-taxed diesel — is regular #2 diesel fuel with a red dye added. The dye marks it as tax-exempt, meaning it is not subject to federal and state highway fuel taxes.

It is chemically identical to clear (on-road) diesel. Same performance. Same quality. Same cetane rating. The only difference is the tax status and the red dye itself.
